Professor of Computer Science and Technology Evangelist in the Department of Computer Science, University of Durham.
An award winning Computer Scientist, Technology Evangelist and Digital Skills Expert, Professor Sue Black was awarded an OBE for “services to technology” in the 2016 Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. She is Professor of Computer Science and Technology Evangelist in the Department of Computer Science at Durham University, a UK government advisor, thought leader, Trustee at Comic Relief, social entrepreneur, writer and public speaker. Sue set up the UK’s first online network for women in tech BCSWomen in 1998 and led the campaign to save Bletchley Park. Sue’s first book Saving Bletchley Park details the social media campaign she led to save Bletchley Park from 2008-2011, it has been an Amazon UK bestseller.
Sue’s specialist research interests include Bias in AI, Software Engineering, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Digital Skills.
Professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Durham, Deputy Executive Dean (Postgraduate Research) in the Faculty of Science, Associate Fellow in the Institute of Advanced Study.
Alexandra I. Cristea is Professor, Deputy Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, Founder of the Artificial Intelligence in Human Systems research group in the Department of Computer Science at Durham University, and lead of the SCENE lab. Her research includes web science, learning analytics, user modelling and personalisation, semantic web, social web, authoring, with over 350 papers on these subjects (over 7100 citations on Google Scholar, h-index 43). Alexandra is also Associate Editor of Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence inclduing special issues on “Learner–Computer Interaction and Intelligent Tutoring Systems” in MDPI, Education Sciences Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Personalized Educational Software” in Frontiers in AI, AI for Human Learning and Behavior Change.
Alexandra’s specialist research interests include: Adaptive personalised web, Applied AI, Learner Analytics Data Analytics, Semantic Web, Social Web, User Modelling, VR, XR, CR and Web Science.
TechUP Tutor and Course Developer
Paula’s background is in IT project management and computer science teacher education. After working as a Senior Lecturer at Edge Hill University for thirteen years she founded Beer Academic Consultancy and has collaborated on many learning programmes for organisations such as the Raspberry Pi Foundation and GCSE Pod.
Her PhD research focussed on the role that play inhabits in learning computer programming. She brings that enthusiasm for play and learning to her work. As well as tutoring on the course, Paula was Lead Programme Designer for Click Start by TechUPWomen, ensuring that the activities are accessible
and enjoyable. She also wrote a successful book on app development (Hello App Inventor!).
